Plenty of Hot Water when I need it
By Jim the self contractor

About Me Handyman, Homeowner, Professional
Pros
- Energy Efficient
- Precise Controls
- Works Quickly
Cons
Best Uses
- Home
- Large Homes
Comments about AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater:
Tankless isn't instant but 5 to 7 seconds isn't too long to wait when there is a medium to long run of pipe.
I have filled a large jacussie tub and another shower on and dish washer running and the hot water just keeps on coming!
Count on making sure the gas line is sized correctly yourself, most plumbers and hvac people don't take the time. I have a gas stove/logs/hybrid heat/and 2400ng tankless and had to use 3/4" pipe and 2lb meter. Though some educating of inspectors was needed I don't have to worry about any system starving for fuel.
Maybe the extra valves should be an option so I don't need to find them elsewhere for servicing the heat exchanger.

Comments about AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater:
This unit has performed great. The installation was more difficult than I expected but I did it myself as well (consider myself a DIY "expert" if there is such a thing). The exhaust was the most problematic since it needs to be completely sealed and could not use our existing exhaust system.
The best thing about it is not running out of hot water. I live in a household with a wife, 3 kids, and pets (so more dirty laundry) so we would often run out of hot water at the most inopportune times, and no threat of punishment could get my 14 yr old from taking 1/2 hour showers. Now, it's not a problem. I don't actually save much money on my bill but that's because we use more hot water now; the other tank was self-limiting, if that makes any sense.
The drawbacks are primarily due to expectations (takes longer to get hot water, and there's a hot-cold-hot surge about 10sec after turning the hot water on) and the drop in hot water pressure from the extra nozzles and piping. This last one is more severe for us because we retrofitted only part of our piping with 3/4" PEX, the rest is still 1/2" copper. But we had to "relearn" where to set the showers, the faucets, etc to get the temperatures we were used to. Again, not a huge deal, and eventually I will complete the retrofit of 3/4" PEX all the way to the bathrooms which should take care of most of the issue.
In all, very glad I went with tankless vs the tank water heater. And as gas prices go up more (and my kids leave the house), I will be very thankful for the savings this unit will provide.

Plumbers don't read directions!
By Happy home owner

Pros
- Quiet and efficient
Cons

Comments about AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater:
[@] The technician found my gas meter was too small (the utility company changed it for free), and I had to have my gas pipe size increased. While he was installing the unit he filled out the information in the owners manual for future reference. He said most plumbers lack the equipment to measure the combustion, but he adjusted my unit and it is silent and we can run two showers and the kitchen faucet at the same time. My daughter now takes longer showers and I have hot water when I jump in for my shower.
